Yale has finally unveiled its successor to the aging Nest x Yale Lock with today's introduction of an all-new smart lock designed for Google Home—and Matter.
Yale Smart Lock with Matter: why it matters
Available in white, gray, and black finishes, the upcoming Yale Smart Lock with Matter sports an elongated chassis with rounded corners and buttons that mimic the aesthetics of the current generation Google Nest video doorbell. The face of the new lock is dominated by a large, on-device keypad with backlighting that allows for easy code input.
In addition to code entry, Yale's latest lock supports remote app controls as well as physical hardware keys. The lock is powered by four AA batteries, which Yale states should last up to 12 months before needing replacements, and is DIY-friendly with the company highlighting an "easy installation" process.
While the new Yale smart lock was designed to complement Google's Nest Doorbell, it supports all the major smart home ecosystems thanks to Matter-over-Thread connectivity. Unlike previous locks from the company, Yale's updated offering does not require an additional wireless module or Wi-Fi bridge—it will work right out of the box for homes with an existing Thread Border Router and Matter Controller.
As is the case with all Matter smart door locks, connected features are dependent on the ecosystem, but at the minimum, we expect to see support for remote locking/unlocking, activity alerts, and the ability to tie it in with other devices through automation. According to Yale, advanced features like creating guest profiles, editing passcodes, and managing access will be available through the Yale Access app—available on iOS and Android.
Yale Smart Lock with Matter: pricing and availability
The Yale Smart Lock with Matter will launch "later this summer" at shopyale.com. The lock will retail for $170 when it makes its debut, similar to other recently announced Matter door locks like the Nuki Smart Lock Go.
