Matter compatible leak sensors seem like a useful addition to any smart home, but their availability has been surprisingly limited. Water detectors and sensors for internal and external use (that is, for indoors and your garden) were added to Matter with version 1.3.

So far, however, adding a Matter-enabled leak sensor has been easier said than done. THIRDREALITY plans to announce its Water Leak Sensor KM1 at CES 2025 (running January 7th-10th in Las Vegas), which could help to throw this niche but important element of the smart home market wide open.

The THIRDREALITY Water Leak Sensor KM1

Matter hardware is already produced by THIRDREALITY, which has recently launched the Smart Bridge MZ1 for Zigbee to Matter Connectivity.

Boasting an 80-meter range, THIRDREALITY’s Matter water leak detection system promises “reliable, scalable leak monitoring.”

With customizable alarm alerts as standard, the device can be integrated with other Matter hardware. This compatibility enables all manner of possibilities via “scenes” – elaborate automations supported by Matter that ensures triggers and responses from any suitable equipment.

So, a leak detector might trigger a Matter-enabled valve controller, visual alerts, and even cutting power to nearby equipment.

Other Items in THIRDREALITY’s CES 2025 Range

Beyond the Matter-compatible water leak sensor, THIRDREALITY is preparing some other hardware for CES 2025

Among these are the Smart Hub Gn3, Motion Sensor R1, Smart Switch MT1, Smart Plug with Wi-Fi Sense, and Smart Bling Gen2. Of these, however, only the Smart Hub Gen3 is stated to support Matter, although the Smart Switch MT1is THIRDREALITY’s first Thread product, so compatibility is likely.

The Smart Hub Gen3 supports Matter and Zigbee, offers local and cloud storage, and handles local routines for home automation. The hub and any connected devices can be managed remotely, as you would expect.

Water Sensors Save Homes

Having a water sensor doesn’t just detect whether your pond is overflowing or your garden flooring through incessant rainfall. Interior sensors in key “wet spots” can help to alert you immediately to ingress and possibly even structural problems.

THIRDREALITY’s new range isn’t expressly Matter-compatible at this stage, but we do know that the water leak sensor and smart hub can be used with other Matter devices. Doubtless further information will be available during and after CES 2025.
