TP-Link is expanding its Matter portfolio by announcing the release of the Tapo P210M Smart Wi-Fi Outlet today. As with other Matter-compatible in-wall smart outlets, the P210M provides convenient app and voice-based remote controls without the bulk commonly seen with smart plugs.
Tapo P210M Smart Wi-Fi Outlet: Design and Specs
Tapo's P210 Smart Wi-Fi Outlet features a standard decora-style design with an all-white plastic frame consisting of flame-retardant materials. The outlet is intended for indoor use in dry locations only, with safe operating temperatures ranging from 32-104 degrees Fahrenheit, and in climates between 10%-90% relative humidity.
The Tapo P210M Smart Wi-Fi Outlet measures 5.07 x 3.33 x 0.1 inches allowing it to fit neatly inside most North American electrical boxes. The outlet supports 120-volt electrical loads up to 15 amps and 1,875 watts, making it suitable for lighting, small appliances, 1/2 HP motors, pumps, and more.
On the front of the unit are two independent smart outlets that can be controlled remotely or via on-device buttons, each with its own status indicator light. Around the back are line, neutral, and ground screw terminals that according to Tapo require 14AWG wires or larger.
Tapo's P210M is DIY-friendly as it comes with everything needed for installation, including a screwless snap-on wall plate. While it only requires basic electrical knowledge and tools it is advised to contact an electrician if you are uncomfortable handling wiring.
Tapo P210M Smart Wi-Fi Outlet: Matter Features and Connectivity
As its name suggests, Tapo's P210M connects to Matter via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. The outlet can connect directly to Matter right out of the box with just a scan of the included QR pairing code, or through the Tapo app, available on iOS and Android.
Once connected to Matter, users can toggle both available outlets through Amazon's Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, and Apple Home. The P210M can also be used in scenes, groups, and automation alongside other Matter devices even those that aren't Tapo branded.
Connecting the outlet to the Tapo app unlocks additional capabilities including scheduling, timers, and energy monitoring. With energy monitoring, users can view review consumption via graphs and logs, and see estimated costs associated with the connected appliances.
The P210M's energy monitoring capabilities also provide additional benefits including Overcharge Prevention and Power Protection. Overcharge Prevention can automatically turn an outlet off once devices like phones are fully charged while Power Protection prevents a connected appliance from exceeding a specified energy threshold.
Tapo P210M Smart Wi-Fi Outlet: Pricing and Availability
The Tapo P210M Smart Wi-Fi Outlet is available now on Amazon at a retail price of $29.99. However, as with other Tapo smart home products, the outlet appears to already be on sale for the holidays as it is currently discounted to just $19.99.
While not as versatile as standard smart plugs, the P210M's low starting price makes it a compelling alternative considering that you essentially get two outlets for the price of one. Its price also makes it the cheapest Matter-compatible in-wall outlet on the market today.
