Following last week's launches of the Smart Lock Ultra Vision Combo and Hub 3, SwitchBot is back again with the release of the all-new Matter-compatible SwitchBot WiFi Smart Garage Door Opener. The latest from SwitchBot aims to simplify garage door monitoring with timely alerts, activity logging, and, of course, remote out of home controls.
Switchbot WiFi Smart Garage Door Opener: why it matters
While the SwitchBot's newest device is marketed as a garage door opener, it appears to be a bundle consisting of the company's existing Matter-compatible relay switch, a wired magnetic contact sensor, and a power supply. This approach is similar to offerings from companies like Aqara and Yepbuds which offer these types of bundles as a workaround to the current Matter specification's lack of garage door support.
According to SwitchBot, the company's bundle is compatible with over 200 garage door opener brands, including Liftmaster, Chamberlain, and Craftsman, and covers over 1,600 individual models. To ensure compatibility before purchasing, SwitchBot provides a handy tool on its product page that provides a simple yes or no answer after entering a make and model.
After installation, users can connect the garage door opener directly to the SwitchBot app or Matter ecosystems like Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, and Apple Home via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Connected features include scheduling, event logging, family sharing, glanceable status reports, automatic delay periods, voice controls, and automation with other smart home accessories.
Since Matter 1.4 doesn't officially support garage door openers, features and functionality may vary depending on the platform. An example of this can be found in screenshots provided by SwitchBot which depict the garage door opener as a simple on/off switch in the Apple Home app not tied to the contact sensor, which presumably is displayed separately in the status overview area.
In addition to garage door controls, the relay portion of the bundle also acts as a Bluetooth repeater for up to 10 SwitchBot devices. The increased range that it provides not only makes smart home controls more reliable, but it also opens the doors to some enticing scenarios, such as using a SwitchBot remote to trigger the opener from inside a vehicle.
Switchbot WiFi Smart Garage Door Opener: pricing and availability
The Switchbot WiFi Smart Garage Door Opener is available now through switch-bot.com in single, double, and four-pack bundles. Pricing for the garage door opener starts at $35.99, and it will also be available for purchase on Amazon starting May 31st.
