SwitchBot has announced that the new Roller Shade, a smart window covering designed for flexibility and ease of use, is now available to buy.
This roller shade differs from other motorized blind systems. Not only is it Matter compatible, the roller features an adjustable width. This makes it suitable for window widths ranging from 22.8 inches to 72.8 inches (58cm – 185cm). So, you can fit it to a variety of window sizes without requiring custom fabrication.
You can also replace the shade fabric, choosing from options like blackout, UV-protective, or insulating materials to suit match your décor or suit other requirements.
Installing Roller Shades Is Painful
Some years ago, my wife decided she preferred roller shades (also known as blinds) over curtains. This was after a decade of using curtains instead of vertical blinds. Anyway, all of the upstairs windows had to be fitted with roller shades, each in a recessed space.

It was quite a tricky fit, as each window width differed; do did the length. This meant using different shade fittings, and different roller lengths, and inevitably one of them didn’t quite fit, resulting in an exchange back at the DIY store.
Now, if we’d had something like the SwitchBot Roller Shade, with its adjustable width, quite a bit of time could have been saved.
Matter-powered Roller Shade
SwitchBot’s Roller Shade is Matter compatible, and can be controlled via the dedicated app, a wired controller, and voice commands. Voice commands are supported over the usual smart home platforms, but you’ll need a SwitchBot Hub with Matter compatibility.
Automation and connectivity with other smart devices can then be established, perhaps using a schedule to open the blinds at a specific time. This is in addition to the various non-Matter settings you can set up, such as closing the blinds when the sun is too bright.
SwitchBot has produced a roller shade system with a straightforward installation, so you don’t need to worry about complex wiring. As demonstrated in the promo video (above), the motor is quiet, and the fabric can be swapped out with relative ease.
