Samsung’s SmartThings ecosystem has received Matter 1.4 certification for its apps and hubs, as confirmed by recent filings from the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA). The SmartThings apps for both Android and iOS obtained certification on Monday, while the “SmartThings Hub Platform” software component was certified on March 6.
SmartThings makes 1.4 Matter
With the new certifications, SmartThings becomes the second platform to officially adopt the Matter 1.4 standards, following Apple’s certification of its platforms and the open-source Darwin system in late January. The adoption of the latest Matter specifications is expected to encourage device manufacturers to align their products with those major platforms through software updates or by developing new hardware.
The updated certification means that users can expect more device-type support and enhanced features in existing compatible devices. Another thing important in Matter 1.4 is the improved experience in device and network credentials (including Wi-Fi and Thread) sharing.
Notably, the updated certification includes the capability to detect formaldehyde, enhancing the platform’s compatibility with environmental sensors that already monitor PM1, PM10, PM2.5, total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), and CO2 levels.
SmartThings finally adopts Thread
Additionally, the certification files reveal the inclusion of Thread Border Router (TBR) management, a significant update aimed at integrating SmartThings into existing Thread networks. Previously, SmartThings operated its own Thread network, leading to multiple, isolated networks within a home, which undermined the benefits of Thread’s mesh technology. The new TBR management feature should enable SmartThings to join existing networks created by devices such as Apple TV 4K, thus offering a more seamless user experience.
SmartThings and Home Assistant are typically the two fastest adopters of new Matter specifications, offering support for a wider range of device types. SmartThings was previously certified under Matter 1.3 in late September 2024, with an official announcement following in October. Given this timeline, an update to the platform is expected soon.
