Major smart switch module maker Shelly released beta Matter firmware for Gen 3 switching units recently, also marking the brand’s official integration with Apple Home via Matter.
Shelly announced Matter support for all Gen 3 devices a year ago. However, it has taken longer than expected for this integration to arrive, even with the native Matter-supported Gen 4 devices now available.
Shelly gets beta at Matter
According to a Reddit post last week, the beta version 1.6 is now available for Gen 3 Shelly devices to enable Matter. A representative from Shelly mentioned that the firmware complies with the older Matter 1.2 specification (issued October 2022). However, this means that energy sensors will not be exposed to Matter platforms, even though PM models do support such features via the Shelly app.
I updated a Shelly 1PM Mini Gen3 via its WebUI. Screenshots of the user interface across major Matter platforms, including SmartThings, Google Home, Apple Home, Alexa, and Tuya Smart, are shown below:
Tuya is the only Matter platform showing that it is unsupported through a Zemismart Matter bridge powered by Tuya Smart. On the other four platforms, the device appears as a smart plug, which differs from some rivals that use a light switch device type that typically displays as a light toggle. Despite this, the response speed remains fast.

One issue identified is the lack of support for the power-on state, which is common among many Matter devices on Home Assistant. This may be due to missing or related clusters. However, since this is the first beta firmware, Shelly could include it in future releases.
Which Shelly devices will have Matter?
So far, Shelly has obtained certifications for the following Gen 3 devices:
- Shelly 1L Gen3
- Shelly 1PM Mini Gen3
- Shelly 1 Mini Gen3
- Shelly 1PM Gen3
- Shelly 1 Gen3
- Shelly 2 Gen3
- Shelly 2L Gen3
- Shelly 2PM Gen3
- Shelly Outdoor Plug S Gen3
- Shelly Plug S MTR Gen3
These devices should have Matter support with the latest 1.6.0-beta1 firmware. Please note that the beta firmware can only be accessed through the WebUI via IP. Users can find the necessary information using the Shelly app. As this is a beta firmware, it is advisable to avoid using it on production devices.
