If CES 2025 told us anything, it was that Matter is ready for smart locks. A whole host of new smart home door locks were unveiled, but some of the most interesting came courtesy of Philips Home Access.

They turned up with two new smart home locks, the 4000 Series Matter-Compatible Smart Deadbolt, and the 5000 Series Video Palm Recognition Smart Lock.

Philips 4000 Series Matter-Compatible Smart Deadbolt

Integrating into the main smart home ecosystems, the 4000 Series Matter-Compatible Smart Deadbolt is Philips’ first Matter-compatible device.

  • Matter-over-Thread Compatibility: Ensured fast, reliable, and energy-efficient connectivity with major smart home ecosystems like Apple HomeKit, Google Nest, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings. You should be able to manage the lock via these platforms’ individual voice assistants or hub apps, for convenient hands-free locking and unlocking. It's one of an increasing number of devices supporting Thread - there have been few Matter over Thread devices to far.

  • Effortless Setup: Quick installation and intuitive pairing eliminated the need for complex configurations. If you’re new to Matter, this usually means scanning a QR code to assist with onboarding the device on your network.

  • Customizable Smart Automations: As with many other Matter-enabled devices standard automations and more advanced “scenes” can be created around the Philips 4000 smart lock.

No pricing is available for the Philips 4000 smart lock, which is expected to be released in Q3/4 of 2025.

Philips 5000 Series Video Palm Recognition Smart Lock

One of the most interesting devices to come out of the entire event the enhanced 5000 Series Video Palm Recognition Smart Lock. This devices doesn’t just handle the usual smart lock features, it adds biometric security and real-time video capabilities.

These reasons alone should explain why it isn’t Matter-compatible – after all, Matter doesn’t do security cameras and doorbells.

This is the second iteration of the Philips 5000 Series smart lock, and features palm vein recognition. While it might seem the sort of biometric technique limited to Hollywood movies, it is considered highly secure, and tough to replicate. The device also features:

  • Built-In Video Monitoring: HD video functionality allows homeowners to monitor and verify who is at their door.

  • Wi-Fi Integration: No need for additional hubs; setup and control were streamlined through the Philips Home Access app.

  • Smart Home Compatibility: Integrates with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control and remote management.

While this isn’t a Matter device, it is exactly the sort of smart home security tech we’d like to see supported by Matter when the platform reaches maturity.

Like the deadbold, the Philips 5000 is slated for a quarter 3/4 release in late 2025.
