Matterbridge, an open-source alternative to Homebridge designed to bring various devices to Matter platforms, announced a new milestone on Monday with the support of Matter 1.4.

The release, categorized as “edge” or “beta,” follows the recent update of Matter.js to the latest Matter specification last week. Now hosted under the official Matter GitHub repository, Matter.js is a JavaScript implementation of the Matter protocol, offering greater flexibility for certain system environments and devices.

Luligu, a major contributor to the project, posted a draft changelog highlighting the beta version 3.0.0, which includes “updated device types to Matter 1.4.” However, simply bumping the version number doesn’t mean full support for all features in the new spec, which also requires more work from the frontend and integration updates. Notably, two new variations of wall switches – “On/Off” and “Dimmer Switch” – have been added as exposed types.

Robovacs coming to Matterbridge

In addition, Luligu mentioned ongoing work to support vacuum robots, following Apple’s recent addition of such support in updates to HomeKit.

Matterbridge has seen rapid growth in features, with expanded integrations now including Home Assistant, Shelly, Webhook, and Zigbee2MQTT. The project bears the hope to become one of the most significant open-source projects based on Matter, similar to the role Homebridge plays for HomeKit. It also fills a gap for Home Assistant, particularly in areas the platform saw no moves on.

For the Home Assistant integration, Matterbridge supports bridging major device types and scenes to Matter platforms, including:

  • On/Off Switch

  • Light

  • Lock

  • Fan

  • Cover

  • Climate

  • Sensors (Temperature/Humidity/Pressure/Illuminance)

  • Automation

  • Scene

  • Script

  • Helpers (input_boolean)

For Zigbee2MQTT, the software can dynamically map device features to types supported by major Matter platforms. Previous testing has shown that Matterbridge can also bring “power monitors” to Matter platforms using version 1.3 or higher, such as SmartThings and Home Assistant.
