After promising support earlier this year at its launch, Nanoleaf is now offering a new Matter Early Access program for the Sense+ Smart Wireless Switch. The new program allows owners of the Sense+ to control Matter-compatible smart home devices from any vendor with just a click of one of the remote's side buttons.
Matter Early Access Requirements
To enable Matter Early Access for your Sense+, you'll first need to meet a few requirements. One is that you'll need a Matter Controller for the ecosystem that you wish to pair it to such as an Apple HomePod, Nest Hub, or Amazon Echo.
Another is that you'll need an active Border Router in your home as the Sense+'s Matter connectivity utilizes Thread. And, last but not least, you'll need version 11.1.0 or later of the Nanoleaf app available on iOS and Android.
How to Enable Matter Early Access
Once you have met all the requirements you can then head over to the Nanoleaf app to enable Early Access. According to Nanoleaf, you can find the new feature by following the steps below:
- Launch the Nanoleaf app.
- Tap the ... More button at the bottom of your screen.
- Tap My Devices.
- Tap the ... More button to the right of your Sense+ Smart Wireless Switch.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Enable under Matter Early Access.
- Tap the Sense+ side button that you wish to add to Matter.
- Pair your Sense+ with your preferred Matter ecosystem.
As with pairing other Matter devices, you'll have 15 minutes to pair the Sense+ to a Matter ecosystem. If you need help, we have the following guides available:

Matter Early Access Features
After enabling Nanoleaf's Early Access feature, you'll have the ability to program both of the Sense+'s side buttons through your preferred Matter ecosystem. This effectively turns the Sense+ into a full-blown Matter-compatible button/remote, allowing it to control devices, scenes, and groups from other vendors.
While only two buttons are exposed to Matter, each side button actually supports three distinct actions: single press, double press, and long press. This gives you a total of six customizable actions that you can use to toggle smart lamps, smart plugs, and more with just a click.
Unfortunately, there are a few limitations to be aware of. The biggest of which is that the Sense+'s buttons are dependent on the current feature sets provided by each of the Matter ecosystems.
This means that while the Sense+ may pair to an ecosystem like Google Home, Google's platform may not provide the ability to program the buttons—something we have seen with other Matter devices like the TUO/arre Smart Button. Another limitation is that the Sense+'s motion and light sensors are currently not available through Matter.
