While new Matter-compatible devices are hitting the scene daily, one area in which the smart home standard has lagged behind is power strips. Things are looking up though, with several new models in the works and through releases like j5create's JSPAC 4430 Matter Smart Plug Power Strip, which is now available at Best Buy stores in North America.

The j5create Matter Smart Plug Power Strip offers tons of versatility by cramming multiple outlets and USB ports into one compact package. The power strip features four 120-volt 15-amp AC outlets that are independently controllable, each capable of handling electrical loads up to 1,875 watts.

j5create's power strip also includes a total of four USB ports that can provide 30 watts of power total—three USB-A, and 1 USB-C. Unlike the AC outlets the USB ports cannot be controlled separately, but they can be toggled remotely as one single group.

According to j5create, the JSPAC 4430 provides several safety features including fire-retardant materials in its case and multiple protections. These include overload, overvoltage, overcurrent, short circuit, and over-heating protections, as well as surge protection that keeps connected appliances and devices safe.

Other highlights include a 4.9-foot cord with a flat 45-degree plug head that allows for placement in tight spaces and a single on-device power switch. And finally, The JSPAC 4430 supports wall mounting with a pair of indentations for screws on its backside.

Thanks to Matter's simplified setup process, the j5create Smart Power Strip can be set up in minutes with just a scan of a QR pairing code. That's because the power strip connects directly to existing 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks without the need for an additional hub, app download, or account.

Through Matter, users can toggle the power strip's AC outlets and USB ports via any of the major smart home ecosystems including Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung's SmartThings. Each outlet will appear as a separate device enabling users to create scenes and groups that best fit their needs.

j5create doesn't appear to offer an app for managing the power strip, so users will need to rely solely on their preferred Matter platform for additional controls such as scheduling and automation. However, these can also include other Matter devices so the power strip's outlets can be set to automatically turn on when the smart light bulbs in a room are toggled or based on the time of day.
