IKEA brings out its first smart LED strip - with Matter compatibility coming

IKEA is bringing out a competitively-priced LED light strip, with Matter compatibility on the way. Could the IKEA effect bring down smarthome product prices elsewhere?

For those of you who like to buy their household gadgets at IKEA, good news is here. The Swedish interior design empire has brought out their first smart LED strip. And it's priced at what you would usually expect from IKEA.

Available only in the Netherlands for now (but will roll out in other locations soon), the Ormanäs LED light strip will set you back a paltry 30 Euros ($32). At four meters long, the dimmable light is controlled by Zigbee, and will only show one color at a time.

Cheapness can sometimes mean simplicity, and anyone used to multiple LED lights may be disappointed with only one light on the Ormanäs. But if you're the kind of person happy with just one light color, then the Ormanäs may be the smart LED strip you've been waiting for. After all, one color is usually all you need for day-to-day use.

The Ormanäs LED strip is compatible with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and of course their own IKEA Home app and the IKEA Styrbar remote.

Eventually, the Ormanäs light strip will become Matter-compatible, along with all other IKEA smarthome products. Once IKEA aggressively starts to add Matter compatibility to their cheap smarthome products, expect to see prices dropping elsewhere to compete.

After all, who else can compete with an $8 wireless dimmer switch?
