Aqara has launched the Voice Mate H1 in China, a compact, Thread-enabled voice controller that utilizes the company’s AI engine for hands-on home automation. First announced at IFA 2024, the Voice Mate H1 represents a further step in Aqara’s effort to compete with larger platforms by integrating generative AI models into its ecosystem.

The device features an Airtag-like design with a rounded shape. A discreet LED ring around its perimeter lights up to indicate active sessions. Unlike always-listening smart speakers, the Voice Mate H1 only powers its microphone when a user physically picks it up, eliminating the need for wake words.

What is the Aqara Voice Mate H1 for?

Voice Mate H1 connects exclusively to the Aqara Hub M3 over the Thread protocol with plans to extend compatibility to more hubs. According to Aqara’s Chinese release post, users can customize and train the AI on specific voice commands via the Aqara app, tailoring the controller to their routines. A built-in magnet allows the device to attach to metal surfaces such as refrigerator doors, putting voice control within easy reach in kitchens or utility spaces. According to the product pictures, it would have two versions in white and black.

It is powered by CR2450 batteries. Aqara estimates between six and twelve months of runtime, depending on sensor use. The company also claims it supports more than ten languages – including Mandarin, Cantonese, English, Korean, and Japanese – and says the controller performs reliably even when users whisper or in noisy environments.

It's also a smart remote

Beyond voice interaction, the Voice Mate H1 doubles as a smart remote. Users can slide it across a table, double-knock its surface or rotate it to adjust lighting color, brightness and temperature, or to trigger custom scenes—functions similar to the Aqara Cube.

For the Matter users, the introduction of Voice Mate H1 enables AI-driven voice commands to more than 50 Matter-compatible device types in Aqara. In theory, it is also possible to create customized “Signal” – packed scene triggers, and use voice control to execute actions on other platforms via Matter virtual devices.

Priced at 299 yuan ($41), the Voice Mate H1 is now available in China. As of press time, Aqara has yet to respond to our inquery on the product. We will update you once more information becomes available to Matter Alpha.
