IKEA is reportedly in the testing phase of Bilresa, a new Matter-over-Thread shortcut button, a device that is rare in the smart home market.
What is the Bilresa?
According to a notable Matter leak @CyberModStudio, the shortcut button, codenamed Bilresa, will feature native support for Thread technology and will include two programmable buttons. This development is part of IKEA’s broader push to integrate Matter and Thread technologies into its range of smart home products, following the recent reveal of its Matter-over-Thread temperature and humidity sensor Timmerflotte.
While the Bilresa button has been identified as being in internal testing, it has not yet received certification from the TÜV, a regular agency responsible for testing IKEA’s consumer products. This suggests that it may be several months before the device is available in IKEA stores, with estimates indicating a timeline of at least six months before it can be released.
Additionally, a German smart home social media account @homewithapple shared an image showing the device. The photo depicts a flat base with two large round buttons, though its authenticity as the final design remains uncertain due to practicality concerns regarding battery requirements.
As a move towards sustainability, the proposed Bilresa button is expected to operate on rechargeable AAA batteries, which aligns with IKEA’s ongoing efforts to phase out disposable CR batteries. The device should come equipped with a magnetic back and a fixing kit for easy installation, making it more versatile for users in different environments like other IKEA smart home gadgets.
More Matter smart buttons
As of now, Matter native smart buttons are somewhat scarce in the market due to the power efficiency requirements associated with Thread technology, which tend to make them more costly while less mature compared to alternatives like Zigbee and Bluetooth. Currently, only a handful of brands, including Arre (formerly known as Tuo) and Nanoleaf, have introduced products that fit this category.

IKEA has already been integrating Matter-related features into its smart home lineup. Many of its existing Zigbee devices, such as air purifiers and Tradfri lights, can now be added to Matter-enabled platforms via the Dirigera bridge. As of press time, Ikea has not responded to inquiries regarding the Bilresa shortcut button or other upcoming products related to Matter and Thread.
