Timmerflotte, Ikea’s First Matter-Over-Thread Sensor, Could Signal Dirigera Hub Upgrades
Ikea's FCC filing reveals the Timmerflotte sensor, their first Thread device, hinting at Dirigera hub upgrades. This move signals a deeper push into Matter, potentially unifying smart home ecosystems for wider compatibility.

Ikea’s Timmerflotte temperature and humidity sensor has appeared in Federal Communications Commission filings, marking the company’s first device to use Thread technology and its second native Matter product, following the Dirigera hub, which serves as a Matter bridge.
The sensor extends Ikea’s smart home portfolio beyond its long-standing Zigbee offerings, though details remain sparse on how it might integrate across the brand’s ecosystems. It shows the firm’s efforts in Matter, particularly in Thread-enabled Matter devices.
Significantly, the Dirigera hub may soon add border router and Matter controller support, features the sensor will rely on.

Images from the filing (fcc.report/FCC-ID/FHO-E2314) show the Timmerflotte sensor has a rounded shape and a slot on the back for wall mounting, with Matter onboarding codes printed near the battery slots. It runs on two AAA batteries, either 1.2-volt rechargeable or 1.5-volt disposable, addressing previous battery compatibility issues seen in Ikea’s Parasoll contact sensor and Vallhorn motion sensor.
A label in the battery compartment reads “Indoor Use Only,” suggesting the device could have a low water and dust resistance rating. A switch in the battery compartment allows users to switch temperature units. This could indicate the sensor has a display for thermometer readings, considering such conversions often happen through an app or gateway.
A test report from TÜV Rheinland confirms Timmerflotte’s primary function is measuring temperature and humidity over a 2.4 GHz Thread connection.
Keetat is listed as the device’s manufacturer on the test report, which should also produce Symfonisk stereo products co-branded with Sonos and Ikea, as well as Ikea’s motorized blinds.

Does the Dirigera Hub Have a Secret Thread Border Router?
Whether the Dirigera hub will support Matter controllers and Thread remains in question. Adding native Matter-over-Thread devices typically requires a Matter controller and a Thread border router. Teardowns indicate the Dirigera hub is equipped with two identical Silicon Labs MG21 radio chips — one potentially for Zigbee, the other for Thread — suggesting it could support both protocols reliably in different radio channels like Aqara M3 Hub unlike the multi-pan solution. As Ikea continues to advance its Thread and Matter roadmap, both features are likely to be available before the new sensor reaches the market.
Ikea’s previous sensor filings with the FCC appeared around mid-2023, with an official release later that November. Based on this timeline, a six-month wait may be possible before more information is released or before updated FCC filings become public on Aug. 25 which will include product photos.
