It is undeniable that the more companies sign up to incorporate Matter, the quicker the smart home standard will grow.
Over the past few months, we’ve seen a number of new Matter devices unveiled. Some of these have come from companies new to the standard, which is governed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA). Along with big name members like Google and Apple, the organization accepts smaller names.
In fact, any company developing IoT and smart home tech with an interest in Matter should join up.
Silicon Labs Embraces Matter
To underline this fact, the CSA has teamed up with Stephan Ewe, Senior Field Sales Engineer at Silicon Labs (whose role is ultimately “ensuring customer satisfaction and driving business growth”), for a video extolling the virtues of tech companies collaborating around Matter.
From Ewe’s point of view, “Matter is an important aspect for our vision of the smart home.” This is underlined by the standard’s focus on key areas that benefit the consumer: “simplicity, interoperability, reliability, and of course security.”
None of this should come as a big surprise. If you know what Matter is, and have kept up to date with Matter 1.4 and other updates to the standard, then those words will seem familiar. So, how does Ewe use the video to encourage potential members to start bringing their smart home and IoT hardware into the Matter space?
“For companies who are considering joining Matter I would say get involved sooner rather than later. Members benefit from being at the table when key decisions are made allowing them to voice their requirements and shape the specification.”
This is an interesting insight into how the CSA manages Matter development. “Even companies that haven't traditionally participated in standard developments,” he continues, “will find that meta working groups processes ensure all voices are heard.”
Will This Bring New Companies Into Matter?
The big question is: will this video, and other efforts, bring more companies into Matter?
After all, for the Matter-driven smart home to grow, more compatible devices are required.
Well, on the face of things, this looks pretty positive, if low key. We only need to look at the recent leaks of new Matter smart home tech being announced in Las Vegas at CES 2025 to see that things are moving along for Matter.
We’ve already seen that the CSA is taking its time with Matter, but it’s fair to say that maybe a few more companies need to get involved. Hopefully, Stephan Ewe’s words will encourage them.
