If you already own various Google products, there's a chance you have everything you need to start building a Matter-based smart home. Several Nest devices come with Google Home and can also serve as a Matter hub.
Sadly, not every Nest device can be hub. The brands's well-known thermostats and smoke alarms can not. Those that do serve as Matter hubs can all interact with your smart gadgets over Wi-Fi, whereas newer models can also manage your Thread-capable devices.
Nest Hub
The Nest Hub is explicitly designed to be a centralized place to manage your smart home. It comes with a tablet-sized display that can use to control you various gadgets, in addition to keeping up with calendar events and streaming Netflix. It serves as a smart speaker both for receiving voice commands and playing music.
There are numerous iterations of the Nest Hub. The older, 1st gen model only interacts with devices over Wi-Fi and has a 7-inch screen. The 2nd gen Nest Hub can control Thread devices over a Thread network.

Nest Hub (2nd Gen)
A smart display with a 7-inch touchscreen, enhanced audio, and Google Assistant, designed for hands-free help, smart home management, and multimedia experiences.
The Nest Hub Max costs twice as much and comes with a 10-inch screen, a camera, and better speakers.
Nest Wi-Fi Pro
The Nest Wi-Fi Pro is a mesh router that can spread your Wi-Fi connection evenly throughout your home. Mesh Wi-Fi is particularly helpful for making internet accessible in larger homes, and having multiple units helps keep any one unit from getting bogged down by managing too many internet-connected devices at once.
If you've chosen Google's mesh router, it can double as your Matter hub and also serves as a Thread border router.
Using your Wi-Fi router as a Matter hub makes quite a bit of sense, since you never have to worry if your hub is within range of Wi-Fi. Mesh Wi-Fi notes are intended to be spaced evenly throughout the house, which is also helpful for filling in the gaps in your Thread network. The cheaper, non-pro Nest Wi-Fi Router can also server as a Matter hub.

Google Nest Wifi Pro
A powerful Wi-Fi 6E mesh system with tri-band connectivity, offering up to 6,600 sq. ft. of seamless, high-speed coverage and smart optimization for gaming, streaming, and everyday use.
Nest Audio
Nest Audio is a smart speaker most akin to the black Amazon Echo cylinder. You can place one in various rooms of your home and play audio at any time. If you do, know that each speaker doubles as a Wi-Fi Matter hub only.
Nest Audio can control your devices via voice commands. For graphical access to your devices, you'll need to pull out your phone or tablet and open the Google Home app.

Nest Audio
A powerful smart speaker with a 3" woofer, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, and Google Assistant for hands-free music streaming and smart home control.
Nest Mini
If you don't already own any Nest devices, Nest Mini offers the cheapest way to purchase a Google Home Matter hub. The price starts at $50, half the MSRP of the larger Nest Audio or the display-equipped Nest Hub. This makes it easier to spread throughout your house.
Yet as a Wi-Fi-only hub, no amount of Nest Mini devices will do anything to help you flesh out your Thread network. Like Nest Audio, the Mini works via voice commands, and you'll need a different device for viewing what smart devices are in your home.

Nest Mini (Gen 2)
A compact and eco-friendly smart speaker with Google Assistant, clear stereo sound, and multilingual support, ideal for global use.
Should you purchase a Nest device for Google Home?
If you already have a Nest device, this is a good way to dip your toes in and see what making a smart home is all about. Just be aware that Google Home is further behind other smart home ecosystems when it comes to supporting Matter. This means some Matter devices, like air purifiers and dishwashers, won't connect to Google Home even though they work with other options, like Samsung SmartThings.
This can be fixed with a software update. The Matter standard is currently at version 1.4. Samsung SmartThings supports the latest version, while Google is still on 1.0. So if you have a Samsung TV and a Nest device lying around, your TV may be the better choice to use as a hub. The SmartThings app is also available for download even if you don't own a Samsung phone.
