One of the easiest ways to start building a Matter-compatible smart home is to head to IKEA and check the Swedish chain’s collection of new devices. But it’s not immediately clear which IKEA devices will work with Matter, and which ones are tied to IKEA’s previous smart home platform, TRADFRI.

So, to help you out, we’ve collected all of IKEA’s smart home devices with Matter compatibility in one place. Use this list the next time you’re in IKEA contemplating that air purifier disguised as a table.

1. DIRIGERA Matter Bridge

Ikea dirigera hub featured

If you want to use IKEA’s new wave of smart home products with Matter, you need a bridge. The DIRIGERA fulfills that role, sitting in your living room a handy puck-shaped device that syncs to the IKEA Home Smart app. It can be simply added to your existing Matter hub to add IKEA’s other devices into your Matter smart home environment.

While it was initially released without Matter support, the DIRIGERA added it first as a beta feature, before fully rolling it out. Housing a Thread radio and with Wi-Fi and Ethernet (required for use as a Matter bridge), it’s simple to set up.

For many, the DIRIGERA is a gateway not just to Matter, but to smart home tech. IKEA seems to understand this, and has produced a reliable Matter bridge. Our review of the IKEA DIRIGERA found in favor of the Matter bridge.

2. JETSTROM LED Light Panels

IKEA JETSTROM Matter compatible LED panel

Available as wall and ceiling-mounted lighting panels, the JETSTROM devices come in multiple sizes, and are compatible with the DIRIGERA and its Matter bridge feature.

JETSTROM is available in two sizes, 30x30cm and 60x60cm. The smaller option is more suited to walls and ceilings in smaller rooms, whereas the larger panel is better suited to ceilings.

These panels are dimmable, and have adjustable color, in the white range, which can suit all manner of environments and scenes.

Details

The JETSTROM LED panels are currently only available in the UK and EU, equivalent price is around $40 for the 30x30cm model, $70 for the 60x60cm variant.

3. TRETAKT Smart Plug

IKEA TRETAKT Matter compatible smart switch

Arguably the best way to get started with smart home tech is with a smart plug. With one of these set up, you instantly get an idea of how useful remote access to individual items is, and how automations can be created.

IKEA’s TRETAKT smart plug can be easily positioned between an appliance and the electrical supply. There are so many things you can do with a smart plug, and the TRETAKT can handle all of them.

Set up is easy, and once it’s online it can be controlled in the IKEA Home Smart app or your Matter hub app, as expected.

4. TRADFRI Bulbs and Lighting Drivers

IKEA TRADFRI smart bulbs are compatible with Matter

Another easy way to make your home smart is to use IKEA’s range of TRADFRI bulbs and lighting drivers. While the TRADFRI name was previously associated with the retailer’s former smart home platform, it has now been repurposed as a name purely for lighting systems.

Using a smart bulb from IKEA and adding it to the Home Smart app is simple. With the integration to Matter set up, it can then be easily used via a Matter hub app, such as Samsung SmartThings, for example. Automations can be made in the Home Smart app only, however.

For larger lighting configurations (such as recessed GU10 LED bulb arrangements), while TRADFRI bulbs are available, you may find it is more efficient to add a Matter-compatible driver. Two wireless TRADFRI lighting drivers are available, in 10W and 30W models.

5. SOMRIG Shortcut Button

Ikea somrig button review labeled

When we reviewed the SOMRIG shortcut button, it was considered to be an “incredibly enticing solution” to adding a physical trigger to up to six pre-configured automations (now increasingly referred to as “scenes”).

It’s a compact, lightweight device, essentially a remote control that can be placed in a wall-mounted caddy. Here, you might use it to initiate a specific lighting pattern, or open and close window blinds.

As with the other devices in this list, the SOMRIG button has Zigbee compatibility and can be controlled through Matter using the DIRIGERA hub with Matter bridge mode enabled. The SOMRIG can be detected in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings, but differences in compatibility are noticeable.

6. STARKVIND Air Purifiers

IKEA even offers a smart home air purifier, which comes in two styles. The more affordable STARKVIND model comes with its own stand and can be placed on a shelf, or perhaps on the floor. The variant model, however, is far more interesting.

In this guise, the STARKVIND is incorporated into a small table (above), suitable for placing ornaments or resting a cup of coffee. This integration of two distinct items is becoming a trademark of IKEA’s smart home offering.

Matter support of the STARKVIND devices is available through the DIRIGERA Matter bridge.

Both variants are available with an optional additional gas filter, for removing odors (cooking, smoking, etc.) from your home.

7. VINDSTYRKA Air Quality Monitor

IKEA air quality monitor is Matter compatible

A smart air quality monitor with Matter support, the VINDSTYRKA is best used in conjunction with IKEA’s STARKVIND devices. It’s designed to detect dangerous particles in the air (PM2.5), as well as temperature, relative humidity and the total Volatile Organic Compounds (tVOC) in your environment.

This is a tiny 2 by 2.25 by 3.5 inch device that can be easily positioned out-of-view. Featuring a clear LCD to communicate current monitoring and illustrate danger levels, the VINDSTYRKA is Matter-compatible via the DIRIGERA Matter bridge.

8. SYMFONISK Wi-Fi Sonos Speakers

SYMFONISK is IKEA's range of Matter compatible Sonos speakers

The final collection of Matter-compatible hardware from IKEA is perhaps the most impressive. SYMFONISK embeds a Wi-Fi Sonos speaker into various ornaments and disguised items, enabling you to enjoy amazing audio without compromising on how your home looks.

SYMFONISK comprises devices such as black and white picture frames, bookshelf-sized speakers (complete with optional “book” disguise), a combination shelf and speaker (which includes a wireless phone charger), and even a lamp with a Sonos speaker incorporated.

These devices can all be controlled using the usual Sonos app as well as via IKEA Home Smart. And because they’re Matter-compatible, you can enjoy additional control via your Matter hub app.

9. INSPELNING Smart Plug/Energy Monitor

IKEA INSPELNING smart plug and energy monitor

In addition to the TRETAKT smart plug, IKEA producers the INSPELNING. This device adds energy monitoring to the feature set, enabling a more granular observation and control over how much power a particular device is using.

Matter is increasingly adding energy monitoring support to its specification, so this is a useful piece of kit to own if you're concerned about a particular device.

10. TREDANSEN (and Others) Electric Blind

IKEA TRADENSEN smart blind

Curiously, IKEA offers a range of differently-named electric blind. All are vertical; some are roller blinds, others are cellular. All are smart, and can be controlled via the DIRIGERA Matter bridge.

All blinds are labeled as “black-out” so should be ideal for keeping electric lighting in, as much as they are for keeping sunlight out. With a connection established via DIRIGERA, you can use remotes, smart home apps, and intoned commands (via a voice assistant) to control the blinds. They can also be controlled according to schedule and any other configurations you can conceive.

For example, an empty house might be set up to close the blinds as soon as it gets dark outside.

Details

IKEA offers other Wi-Fi connected electric blinds that are compatible with the DIRIGERA. We’ve listed the price of approx. 34x76¾ blind for each model.

11. TRADFRI Remote Button

While the TRADFRI name has been retained by IKEA, it is largely associated with lighting (see above). However, the TRADFRI remote control device is also compatible with the DIRIGERA. While described by IKEA as a remote control, it is a programmable shortcut button.

As with the multifunction SOMRIG shortcut button, the TRADFRI remote has labels to denote what it is used for. This programmable button can be used to open and close blinds, switch lights on and off, or any other two-state command.

12. VALLHORN Motion Sensor

IKEA VALLHORN motion sensor

A wireless motion sensor that works inside and out, the VALLHORN’s DIRIGERA compatibility brings some useful automation possibilities.

It can activate lights (up to 10), and works day or night. It could be used as an automatic “nightlight” for night terror-prone children, or play its part in a more elaborate scene, perhaps in conjunction with a TV set, smart blinds, a music player, or all three.

13. PARASOLL Door/Window Sensor

IKEA PARASOLL Door/Window Sensor

IKEA’s best option for monitoring movement inside your home is the PARASOLL sensor. Suitable for doors and windows, DIRIGERA compatibility means that you can use it to detect intruders or specify automations that trigger when people leave or enter rooms.

Powered by a single AAA battery (IKEA recommends its own brand, LADDA), the PARASOLL can also be used in a wardrobe to trigger a lamp. It’s a compact smart home addition that can add some interesting flexibility to your set up.

IKEA is Making Smart Homes Matter

It’s fair to say that IKEA’s pre-Matter smart home platform was somewhat lacking by today’s standards. It makes sense for the Swedish furniture-and-meatballs retailer to embrace the future, and it’s becoming clearer – in the clear absence of any compelling alternatives – that for the foreseeable, Matter is that future.

We’re particularly impressed by IKEA’s combination of furniture and smart home tech, such as the SYMFONISK range of Sonos speakers, and the STARKVIND air-purifier-in-a-table. In fact, there is a good chance that IKEA could really make its Matter compatible tech stand out with similar combinations in future.
