At this point, it seems clear that Matter is the answer to smart home fragmentation, even if a complete solution seems some years away. As an open-source connectivity standard, Matter is accessible for manufacturers to develop with, making it ideal for encouraging adoption.

In a new video from the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the Vice President at Yeelight, Coaster Li, explains how Matter has the potential to reshape the smart lighting market.

Why Is Yeelight Using Matter?

Describing Matter as "the fundamental factor, fundamental protocol of our whole product strategy in the future,” Yeelight are treating Matter as if it will become the de facto standard for smart home connectivity.

Considering the aim of the CSA is to ensure Matter supports interoperability, compatibility, security, and reliability, this makes perfect sense. As with many other manufacturers featured in CSA videos since IFA Berlin 2024, Yeelight’s Coaster Li is banking on early adoption of the standard to give his company a competitive advantage.

By adopting Matter, Yeelight gains access to a broader ecosystem. This can potentially increase the company’s market reach, exposing it to a wider customer base.

Advocating for Things That Matter

We’ve seen in some other videos (such as the chat with Bosch’s Christian Thiess) that the CSA strongly believes in collaboration between smart home developers. As Li puts it, "join the group, join the family, learn the message from the industry."

This approach highlights the collaborative nature of Matter participation from companies like Yeelight, which opens up various benefits. New hardware developers gain access to technical specifications, can collaborate with other industry players, and can enjoy insights into future developments.

While the platform specification has made it to Matter 1.4, it is still a long way from being the finished product. Yeelight’s approach is that they “think [they] have the duty to contribute to the industry," a commitment that could only exist in the CSA’s collaborative environment.

While industry buy-in, consumer education, and various technical challenges will no doubt prove likely roadblocks in future, Matter is the best bet for a simpler smart home experience.

Coaster Li notes that "smart lighting is the important category of smart home," and Matter's success is intrinsically linked to the growth of this sector. It’s an easy win – a segment of the smart home market that delivers both convenience and visual pleasure. For Yeelight, association with Matter can enhance its brand, reduce development costs, and place it as a strong alternative to Govee and other LED lighting manufacturers.

If "Matter will be the standard of the whole industry," getting on-board early is a smart option, for both manufacturers and smart home users.
